This paper focusses on the relationship between material goods, inner development and sustainability. The inner, or spiritual, side of our nature is discussed and the implications for design and the nature of products are explored. The notion of 'appropriate concern' for products is introduced as an approach for re-assessing the conceptual, production and use stages in a product's life cycle.
