Local authority sports provision for the unemployed

With unemployment levels in the U.K. likely to remain high for the forseeable future, the extent to which leisure in general, and sport in particular, can provide a substitute for paid employment is the subject of much debate. With the rise of unemployment in the 1970s, and the increasing community orientation of public sector leisure services, many local authorities now cater for the unemployed in their sports provision. The research upon which this thesis is based was funded by the Sports Council, in collaboration with the Sports Council for Wales, the Sports Council for Northern Ireland, and the Scottish Sports Council.
