Jannic aux deux sous: Tuppenny Jack
‘Jannic aux deux sous’ was collected by Luzel from Marie Geffroy, an “old
beggarwoman” (vieille mendiante), at Plouaret, 1870, who told the tale in Breton. It
was first published in French in September 1888 in Revue des traditions populaires
(Vol. III, 474-83) and this translation is from the French text published in Contes
Retrouvés, Vol.II (1998, 27-39). It appears to be the only story he collected from
Marie Geffroy, although the previous year he had collected a tale from Guillaume
Geffroy, a servant also from Plouaret, presumably a relative....
