Abstract: Concern about the imbalance in the number of males and females in the physical sciences and engineering has been expressed for many years. A number of recent publications suggest that scientists and technologists should stop thinking of girls and women as lacking in ability or as problematic because they are not interested in technology, and should instead start to analyse and question the nature, history, procedures and aims of science and technology.
