Abstract: Quotatives present reported speech—verbal discourse which was or could be uttered or thought—as a quotation, as it was or could be said rather than as a reformulation. This article overviews research on quotatives, then outlines quotative conventions in discourse, distinctions in types of quotatives and quoted content, use of and attitudes toward quotatives over time, and directions in research.
