Abstract: This introduction contextualises the debates between Peter Kropotkin and Errico Malatesta which symbolised the split in the anarchist movement in 1914 in order to highlight the conceptual fuzziness of concepts central to the revolutionary socialist movement: internationalism and anti-militarism. It uses this analysis to consider the long term effects of the divisions within the anarchist movement and to show how the war shaped the development of new anarchist strategies.
