This study analyses the paintings produced by Paul Gauguin, and the Pont-Aven School, of Brittany. The paintings are examined as texts, with consideration of their literal and symbolic representations, in the context of the artists, their critics, and their intended audiences' social, cultural and economic backgrounds.
