Title: Man's physiological responses to fructose

Abstract: Dietary changes that have occurred during the last one hundred years have resulted in an increased contribution of fructose to the diet in the United Kingdom. Over this period the total carbohydrate intake has declined and in effect a partial dietary substitution of glucose sources by fructose has occurred. These dietary events have coincided with the emergence of certain affluent diseases, the most significant being obesity, gout, diabetes mellitus and in particular coronary heart disease (CHD). The extent of these diseases, their interrelationships and the possible involvement of increased dietary sugar in the manifestation of CHD is discussed. [Continues.]
