Mining engineers have traditionally used the Basic (or American) Effective Temperature Scale (BET) to monitor climatic conditions and to evaluate control measures. Recent proposals for the international standardization of thermal indices have led to some discussion concerning the applicability of BET to mining conditions. This research was undertaken to examine the industry's requirements in relation to thermal indices and to compare the predictive ability of BET with that of other prominent thermal indices (WBGT, P4SR, HSI and ITS).
