A range of 2-substituted-2-nitropropanes (Me2(X)NO2 with X = I, Br, Cl, NO2, PO3Et2, COMe, CO2Et, SR, SO2R, p-NO2C6H4, p-NO2C6H4N2, CN, SCN, and N3) have been prepared and tested for antimicrobial activity against a representative range of micro-organisms. The structure–activity relationship (S.A.R.) indicates antimicrobial activity of Me2C(X)NO2 in the order of I > SCN, Br > SR, p-NO2C6H4 > Cl, NO2 > SO2R, N3, CN, PO3Et2, COMe, CO2Et, and p-NO2C6H4N2.
