The concept of professionalism implies a body of knowledge, skills
and traditions derived from practical experience in an activity recognised
and approved by society. This work is culture-specific because
it focusses on determining the degree of professionalism attained in
Nigerian librarianship since 1948 when library development and librarianship
was established in the country.
The role of information and libraries is increasingly gaining national
recognition and acceptance but its importance as a professional
activity seems underrated in the country's development plans. It was
considered that the factors of growth in the professionalisation of
librarianship need to be demonstrated so as to enlighten the situation
and influence future developments. [Continues.]
