The aim of this work has been to study the reaction of recoil tritium atoms with hydrogen and its isotopic variations (T + H2, T + D2, T + H2 - D2 (1:1 mixture) and T + HD) both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical part includes the modification of a simple (hard-sphere energy transfer) model of hot atom reactions and uses the modified version to calculate the reaction cross sections of the various hydrogen isotope systems and the dissociation cross sections of the excited products (HT and DT) in various inert gas moderators (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe).
