Two luminescent labels based on coumarin compounds were synthesised. The luminescence characteristics of the labels, their derivatives and ten other coumarin compounds which could form the bases for the synthesis of further labels were studied. None of these compounds showed room temperature phosphorescence. 7-hydroxycoumarin was used to prepare a label, 7-(4-6-dichloro-triazinyl-2-oxy) coumarin, 7-DTC. After characterisation, the label was employed in the thin-layer phosphorimetric determination of phenols at 77K. Addition of potassium iodide to the acetone, THF/ethanol and ethanol solutions of the label and the derivatives enhanced the ΦP/ΦF ratios at 77K. Both the label and the derivatives were separable and detectable in the nanogram range on thin-layer plates. [Continues.]
