The stresses generated in photoelastic containers by powder beds under static and dynamic loading conditions are examined. These induced wall stresses are analysed using the Scattered Light Photoelastic Technique to permit measurement of all the stress tensor components, magnitudes and directions of the principal stresses are given, and the respective strain tensor, principal strains and dilations calculated. An explanation to relate wall stresses to bed stresses is offered.
