The magnetoresistive effect is explained, and its use in commercial resistors is described. The resistance/displacement characteristic of a magnetoresistor moving in the magnetic field produced by rectangular section polepieces is examined. The factors which affect the linear range are studied and design information for displacement transducers is derived, A technique is developed for determining the pole shape associated with a specified resistance/displacement law. A method of manufacture of the polepieces is evolved and the related problems are discussed. [Continues.]
