Fault diagnosis has developed into an integral part of engineering applications.Within the increasing safety conscious climate of today’s world, prompt detection, diagnosis and rectification of faults is imperative to the operation of a system. In the case of commercial aircraft, efficient diagnosis can minimise both the financial cost of downtime and the disruption caused to passenger travel. The diagnostic method described in this paper is based on the application of the digraph procedure. Digraphs model the information flow, and hence fault propagation, through a system. A computational method has been successfully developed to conduct the fault diagnostics process and produce a list of the determined fault combinations. Guidelines are provided for a mechanism to further identify the most likely cause(s) of a given deviation. This paper looks in detail at the application of the diagnostic method to a commercial aircraft fuel system with integrated control.
