Abstract: This paper discusses the current concerns surrounding the psychometric properties of the Transfer Test used in Northern Ireland to select pupils aged 10-11 years old for a grammar school education. It highlights the lack of validity and reliability in the current selection system and offers computerised adaptive testing as the viable alternative for academic selection which reduces inequities associated with coaching and meets the international standards of validity and reliability.
