The process of exciting sound in metals with absorption in them of intensity-modulated laser radiation is analyzed. Analytical expressions are given for the amplitudes of the surface and volumetric acoustical waves excited by the laser beam. The directivity diagrams of the volumetric waves are ldentified and their dependence on the beam width is investigated. The acquired results are compared wiih the experimental data.
